Getting It System Toolkit (GIST)

The Getting It System Toolkit (GIST) is a customizable set of tools and workflows that will enhance interlibrary loan and just-in-time acquisitions services; purchase request processing; and cooperative collection development efforts.

GIST was developed at the State University of New York College at Geneseo with an eye toward converging ILL and Acquisitions workflows and user interfaces, while leveraging the strengths of various workflows and systems. Beware: GIST was designed to transform the business of borrowing, buying, and accessing.

How does it do this? GIST provides users and the library practical and thoughtful resolution of disparate information sources with key data, such as: uniqueness (for cooperative collection development strategies); free online sources (to reduce cost and/or catalog eBooks just-in-time); reviews and rankings (to add value to the request process); and purchasing options and prices (to give users and libraries options and streamline library work). GIST is flexible, so you can pick or choose which features to use or adapt.

Before implementing GIST for ILLiad Webpages, it is highly recommended that you prepare your Acquisitions and ILL staff for the big change. Communication and cooperation between the two departments is absolutely essential, so take your time to explain how GIST will transform and improve their day-to-day workflows.

• GIST v. 1.1.3 Update – To update an existing GIST install, just extract the files in the zip folder to the GIST folder in your web directory. Overwrite the old files when prompted. This will not delete your configuration information.

These instructions will guide you through the installation of the GIST components, as well as the ILLiad customizations that you will need to implement.

Note: Getting It System Toolkit (GIST) Components run on your web server using a .NET framework – so even hosted ILLiad sites can use these tools. Prior to installation, we strongly recommend saving a backup copy of all your ILLiad web files.

The Gift and De-Selection Manager is an easy to implement and easy to use open-source standalone software for automating your gift management and de-selection processing. This standalone software is part of the Getting It System Toolkit (GIST), designed to leverage data of various systems, streamline library processes, and reduce staff time for decision making.

Use ISBN, OCLC#, or Title to find all the information you need for making quick decisions while processing gifts and de-selecting materials:

• Bibliographic and holdings data from Worldcat API
• Conspectus data that you can configure to your collection building profile needs
• Price data from Amazon API
• Full Text data from Hathi Trust and Google Books
• Local data from your ILS
• Customized data from spreadsheets, like Caldecott and Newberry award books – pre-loaded for you.
• De-selection decisions may be evaluated on an item-by-item basis or in a batch de-selection workflow
